Statement from the BSG Executive
The British Society of Gastroenterology was appalled by the findings of this week’s British Journal of Surgery publication reporting on women and men sexually assaulted and raped in the last 5 years. Whilst this study was undertaken in the surgical workforce it would be naïve to think that this kind of behaviour has not occurred in gastroenterology practice.
We applaud the brave women and men who have contributed to this report and hope it acts as a catalyst for change and support for those hesitant or afraid to report these criminal acts. The BSG stands with you.
The BSG unequivocally condemns sexual violence and the cultures that exist to protect perpetrators, it has no place in the world, let alone in our healthcare environments. We also believe that it is time that we challenge the cultural environment where such behaviour is allowed to develop. For too long we have allowed misogynistic and discriminatory talk to be passed off as harmless banter and unsolicited attention brushed over.
The BSG is committed to reflecting on this report and this statement will be followed up soon with a more detailed action plan.
We are very aware that this report will have deeply affected some individuals with personal experience of this shameful behaviour and we are committed to supporting you and will provide further details in the action plan.
