Iron Deficiency Anaemia is a common presentation to gastroenterology. In this Masterclass video, Prof Reena Sidhu, current BSG Education Chair and co-author of the updated BSG guidelines on IDA, runs through a clinical case to discuss when, how, and when not to investigate IDA. The role of FIT in IDA, non-anaemic iron deficiency, anaemia in the elderly and in those with chronic heart failure, and recurrent anaemia are explored.

Prof Reena Sidhu is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and a Honorary Professor with the University of Sheffield. Her main area of interest is the small bowel and she is currently the lead for the tertiary double balloon enteroscopy service at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and co-runs one of the biggest Capsule Endoscopy services in Europe. Both of these services are established regional services which have won national awards. She runs an international capsule endoscopy course for doctors and nurses and carries out clinical research related to the small bowel and continues to publish actively in this field with >100 publications.

Prof Sidhu has research fellows under her banner, is regularly invited to speak at national and international meetings, and has led a European wide curriculum for Capsule and Device Assisted Enteroscopy for the ESGE. She was awarded the Hopkins Endoscopy Prize by the BSG in 2012, the first female gastroenterologist to have ever won this, and was appointed as the BSG Education Chair in 2021 having been the BSG Web Editor previously and curated an entire new Educational Platform for the BSG.
