Every gastroenterologist needs to be aware of what narcotic bowel syndrome is and tell it apart from opioid bowel dysfunction. The diagnosis is not common but extremely important to recognize in order to avoid unnecessary iatrogenic damage to the patient.

Hans Törnblom
Hans Törnblom MD PhD is an associate professor of gastroenterology at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden. He had his academic training at Karolinska Institute and he has since then been an author and co-author in studies concerning pathophysiologic mechanisms and their putative role, including implications for treatment, in disorders of gut-brain interaction and severe gastrointestinal dysmotility. His clinical focus is efficient and safe diagnosis and patient centred care where he now has a particular focus on the treatment of chronic abdominal pain in benign conditions.
Dr Francesca Moroni
Francesca Moroni is a consultant gastroenterologist in NHS Grampian since Jan 2021 with an interest in neurogastroenterology and nutrition. She works at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. She is the chair of BAPEN Scotland, former BSG Deputy Web Editor (Web Education Team) and current BSG Mentoring lead. She is the editor of Digest This! webinars hosted by SSG.
