CSSC Service Development Prize


This award is currently closed.

This award recognises the work carried out by BSG members, as a team or as an individual, that has made a demonstrable impact on patient care by innovative service improvement.

There will be prizes for the top three submissions, as well as a new prize category for nurses and AHPs, who will also all receive free registration for the day:

  • 1st Prize £500
  • 2nd Prize £300
  • 3rd Prize £100
  • Nurse/AHP prize £500

The winners will receive a certificate at the BSG Annual Meeting. The winning submission could be developed into a publication in Frontline Gastroenterology, subject to peer review. It will also be published on our BSG website as a service success story. Applicants must demonstrate how they or a colleague have improved service provision or had a positive impact on patient care.

Please note that you must confirm that you have not submitted an abstract on the same topic. If you have submitted an abstract on the same topic and you are successful with this prize, it will be withdrawn from judging for oral presentation.

Eligibility

The principal applicant must be an active BSG member to be eligible. The finalists will be required to attend to present their work during the Service Symposium at the BSG Annual Meeting.

How to apply

Below are the fields you’ll need to complete.

  • Please demonstrate how you or a colleague have improved service provision or had a positive impact on patient care: maximum of 1000 words and 2-3 tables or figures

Judging information

All candidates will be scored across the following categories by a panel of BSG reviewers recruited by the CSSC Chair and will include the Editor-in-Chief of Frontline Gastroenterology and BSG Nursing Chair:

  • What were the challenges to your service and why did you need to change? (Score 1-5 –0= no evidence of need to change to 5 demonstrated significant evidence of need for change)
  • How did you overcome the challenges? (Score 1-5 –0= challenges not overcome to 5 challenges fully overcome)
  • What were the outcomes? (Score 1-5 –0= not demonstrated any change to 5 demonstrated a significant change in patient experience)
  • What were the learning points and how can this influence other teams? (Score 1-5 –0= not demonstrated any learnings to 5 demonstrated learning and influence on other teams)

Where possible, the reviewers are blinded. However, please note that applicants for these awards are often unique and well established. Therefore, it may be possible to determine who an applicant is based on the information they provide.

Barbers’ Company Award for Trainees in Gastroenterology

The Barbers’ Company Award for Trainees in Gastroenterology was introduced in 2021, and has been established by the Barber’s Company in memory of Sir Francis Avery Jones, past Master of the Barbers’ Company and past President of the BSG.
