Trainees Leadership and Management Prize

This award is designed to identify and promote talented trainee leaders nationally in order to promote leadership in gastroenterology in the future. There is a single award of £1000.
Eligibility
This award is open to any BSG member who is training in gastroenterology in the UK. This includes members of the BSG Trainee Section Committee not directly involved in the organisation of the award. Applications are welcomed from doctors in LAT posts as well as those in numbered posts. The winner is required to attend the BSG Annual Meeting to receive their prize.
Application Process
Submissions are anonymised prior to being assessed by a panel approved by the BSG. Please answer fully and adhere to the word limit.
The bullet points below are suggestions for areas you may wish to emphasise and discuss in your personal statement. They are meant as a guide only.
- Describe your personal leadership development journey
- Details of your personal experience of leading and engaging at various levels (e.g. team, system, organisation) with details of your impact on others
- Provide details of your personal impact and effectiveness as a leader
- Give evidence of leading on transformational and innovative change for the benefit of patients, staff, and the public

Applications for this award open Thursday 30th November 2023 and close Friday 16th February 2024 at 5pm.

- Please provide a personal statement detailing your leadership qualities, project(s) you have led and been involved with, and how your actions have impacted change: 1000 words
Judging information
A panel recruited by the Trainee Section Committee will score candidates as below, and the scores will be added and then ranked with the top score being the best application:
- Change in personal leadership skills (Score 1-5 –0= not demonstrated any change to 5 demonstrated a significant change in personal leadership skills)
- Impact of applicants’ leadership and engagement skills on teams (Score 1-5 –0= not demonstrated any organisational impact to 5 demonstrated a significant organisational impact on others)
- Personal Impact as a leader (Score 1-5 –0= not demonstrated any personal impact to 5 demonstrated a significant organisational impact on others)
- Driving change for benefit of patients, staff or public (Score 1-5 –0= not demonstrated any change to 5 demonstrated significant change)
The panel is selected by the BSG Trainees Chair and is a selection of eminent individuals in their field. A diverse selection of reviewers from different backgrounds are invited to ensure a fair system is in place. To ensure the process is fair for all applicants, the reviewers are also kept anonymous. Reviewers will declare any conflicts of interest before the process, and are removed if this is the case.
Where possible, the reviewers are blinded, however please note that applicants for these awards are often unique and well established. Therefore it may be possible to determine who an applicant is based on the information they provide.

Barbers’ Company Award for Trainees in Gastroenterology
The Barbers’ Company Award for Trainees in Gastroenterology was introduced in 2021, and has been established by the Barber’s Company in memory of Sir Francis Avery Jones, past Master of the Barbers’ Company and past President of the BSG.
Dame Parveen Kumar Award for Education and Training 2024
The Dame Parveen Kumar Award for Education and Training (previously BSG Gold Trainer Award) is awarded annually to recognise the work of excellent trainers in developing the future of the gastroenterology and hepatology specialty.
UK Barrett’s Oesophagus Registry (UKBOR) Prize
UK Barrett’s Oesophagus Registry (UKBOR) Prize was introduced in 2022 and created to support further research into this important area of gastroenterology.
