Trainees Young Gastroenterologist of the Year - Clinical and Translational Science

The BSG Young Gastroenterologist of the Year – Clinical & Translational Science is designed to identify and promote talented trainee clinical scientists nationally in order to promote research and science in gastroenterology for the future. There is a single award of £1000.
Eligibility
The award is open to any BSG member who is training in gastroenterology in the UK. This includes members of the BSG Trainee Section Committee not directly involved in the organisation of the award. Applications are welcomed from doctors in LAT posts as well as those in numbered posts.
Conditions of the Award
The principal applicant must be an active BSG member to be eligible. The winner is required to attend the meeting to receive their prize. The successful applicant must submit a short report (300-500 words) to the Trainees’ Section within 12 months of the award. The report should include a summary of the work undertaken and an outline of the results.

Applications for this award open Thursday 30th November 2023 and close Friday 16th February 2024 at 5pm.
Below are the fields you’ll need to complete.
- Describe your personal research development: 200 words
- Provide evidence of individuality of concepts and ideas in your research field: 200 words
- Provide evidence of looking towards best practice from outside your own centre nationally & internationally in your academic area: 200 words
- Describe evidence of your own degree of contribution to attributable academic achievements: 200 words
- Provide details of your innovation in research for the benefit of patients and the public: 200 words
- Describe any experience of working in partnership with clinical partners, external stakeholders and/or co-production with patients: 200 words
- Give details of wider working in the field e.g. relevant positions held, grant applications, grant & journal reviewing: no word limit
- Provide details of dissemination & engaging others in research work e.g. book chapters, articles, papers, teaching, presentations, and course development: no word limit
Judging information
A panel of judges will score candidates across the following categories:
- Personal research skills (Score 1-5 –0= no evidence of research to 5 demonstrated a significant amount of research, including individuality of concepts and ideas, contribution to attributable academic achievements)
- Research innovations for benefit of patients (Score 1-5 –0= not evidenced to 5 demonstrated a significant benefit to patients)
- Research partnerships and collaborations (Score 1-5 –0= no evidence to 5 examples of partnerships with external stakeholders/patients)
- Engaging others in the research field (Score 1-5 –0= no evidence to 5 significant engagement of others though articles, teaching, courses and journal reviewing etc)
The panel is selected by the BSG Trainees Chair and is a selection of eminent individuals in their field. A diverse selection of reviewers from different backgrounds are invited to ensure a fair system is in place. To ensure the process is fair for all applicants, the reviewers are also kept anonymous. Reviewers will declare any conflicts of interest before the process, and are removed if this is the case.
Where possible, the reviewers are blinded, however please note that applicants for these awards are often unique and well established. Therefore it may be possible to determine who an applicant is based on the information they provide.

The Barbers’ Company Award for Trainees in Gastroenterology was introduced in 2021, and has been established by the Barber’s Company in memory of Sir Francis Avery Jones, past Master of the Barbers’ Company and past President of the BSG.

The Dame Parveen Kumar Award for Education and Training (previously BSG Gold Trainer Award) is awarded annually to recognise the work of excellent trainers in developing the future of the gastroenterology and hepatology specialty.

UK Barrett’s Oesophagus Registry (UKBOR) Prize was introduced in 2022 and created to support further research into this important area of gastroenterology.
