Biographies

Prof Ramesh Arasaradnam, OBE

Ramesh is Professor of Gastroenterology with Hon. positions at Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick & Leicester Cancer Centre, University of Leicester.

He is currently the Academic Vice President at the Royal College of Physicians London and previous chair of the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) research committee. He led the chronic diarrhoea guideline in 2018 and developed the research strategy for the BSG in 2021. Currently he chairs the National Advisory Group on Health & Environmental Sustainability.

His research interest is varied from mechanistic insights into colon cancer, bile acid physiology, volatile organic compounds & the microbiome with clinical focus on novel diagnostic tools to improve clinical pathways. He holds a specialist tertiary clinic for bile acid diarrhoea.

Dr Ian Beales

Dr Beales is Clinical Associate Professor in Gastrointestinal Pharmacology, University of East Anglia and Consultant Gastroenterologist, Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital. He is currently Director of the Norwich GI Physiology Service, Director of the Norwich Endoscopy Training Centre and Chair of the Examination Board and Head of Question writing for the ESEGH examination.

After qualifying from Barts in London, he completed Gastroenterology training in London, Cambridge, Norwich and undertook a period of research at University or Michigan. His initial original research for his MD was on the pathogenesis of H pylori infection and gastric secretory function. He has expanded these interests and maintains broad clinical and research interests in all aspects of GI physiology and pharmacology, as well as education and training. He has authored over 170 original papers. He is Chief and Principal investigator in a portfolio of academic and commercial clinical trials. He was Chair of the BSG gastroduodenal section 2018-2023 and is currently a member of the oesophageal and small bowel/nutrition section committees.
