Where do small molecules fit in IBD?

The Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) treatment landscape is becoming increasingly more complex with new agents and mechanisms of action. However, the need remains to personalise decision-making for individual patients. Here, Dr John Paul Seenan takes us through how and when to use the newer ‘small molecules’ now available in the UK.


Biographies

Dr John Paul Seenan

Dr Seenan is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and leads the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Unit at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. He is also an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Glasgow.

He completed his undergraduate and postgraduate training in the West of Scotland during which he was awarded an MD for clinical research in luminal gastroenterology.

He was awarded a NHS Research Scotland Career Fellowship in 2018 to help support his interest in clinical research and became a Senior NRS Fellow in 2021. He acts as chief/principal investigator for a number of academic and commercial clinical trials in IBD.

Dr Francesca Moroni

Francesca is a Consultant Gastroenterologist in NHS Grampian since Jan 2021. She has special interest in nutrition and neurogastroenterology. She is the current BSG Mentoring Lead, former BSG Deputy Web Editor (Web Education Team) and current Digest This! Webinar Chief Editor. She is also BAPEN Scotland Chair.
