Guts UK/Dr Falk Awards 2025 - Apply Now

Applications for the Guts UK/Dr Falk Awards are now open and provide a real opportunity to celebrate the everyday wins of healthcare professionals across the UK.

The Guts UK/Dr Falk Awards recognise the achievements of healthcare professionals who bring new insight into gastroenterology, pancreatology and hepatology to improve patient care in the UK.

The awards are open to UK-based medical students, primary and secondary care nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, F1/F2 doctors and specialist registrar (SpR) trainees, and are an opportunity to achieve national recognition and financial support for career progression. 

 

What awards can I apply for?

There are 11 grant prizes to be awarded across seven categories, including:


Medical Student Prize

A £1,000 prize for the best essay on gastroenterology (including hepatology and pancreatology) research personally undertaken by medical students studying in the UK who were on an intercalated BSc/MRes/MSc/MPH/MD/MBPhD* course during the previous academic year (2023/24).

Best Essay on Gastroenterology

Four £1,500 prizes for medical students taking full-time science degrees in the UK (BSc/MRes/MSc/MPH/MD/MBPhD*) focusing on gastroenterology (including hepatology and pancreatology) in the current academic year (2024/25).

Primary and Secondary Nurses Prize

A  £1,000 prize for UK-based primary and secondary care nurses working in gastroenterology (including hepatology and pancreatology), for initiatives that have improved patient care.

Dietitian Prize

A £1,000 prize for UK-based dietitians working in gastroenterology (including hepatology and pancreatology) for initiatives that have improved patient care.

Pharmacist Prize

A £1,000 prize for UK-based pharmacists working in gastroenterology (including hepatology and pancreatology) in primary and secondary care, who have developed programmes and initiatives that have improved patient care in some capacity.

F1/F2 Doctors Award

Two £2,500 awards for UK-based F1/F2 doctors to facilitate prospective research in an area relevant to gastroenterology (including hepatology and pancreatology).

SpR Trainee Award

Up to £10,000 for UK-based gastroenterology SpR trainees (who hold a National Training Number) who would like to conduct an audit or quality improvement project in any area of gastroenterology (including hepatology and pancreatology) or nutrition.

 

How do I apply?

Applications can be made via the Guts UK website. The process involves completing a short application form. You’ll need to print it off, sign it, and email a scanned copy back to [email protected] by the closing date.

The deadline for applications is Monday 17th February 2025 at 5pm.

Barbers’ Company Award for Trainees in Gastroenterology

The Barbers’ Company Award for Trainees in Gastroenterology was introduced in 2021, and has been established by the Barber’s Company in memory of Sir Francis Avery Jones, past Master of the Barbers’ Company and past President of the BSG.

Dame Parveen Kumar Award for Education and Training 2024

The Dame Parveen Kumar Award for Education and Training (previously BSG Gold Trainer Award) is awarded annually to recognise the work of excellent trainers in developing the future of the gastroenterology and hepatology specialty.
